Jax, the 18-year-old singer from New Jersey, might have anticipated a lot of things about being on American Idol, but she surely didn’t expect to wind up sitting in the same spot where Taylor Swift was discovered. But that’s just what happened to her Friday at the Bluebird Café in Nashville.
Jax and the four other remaining Idol finalists visited Nashville Thursday and Friday, getting tours of the city’s Lower Broad entertainment district, the offices of Big Machine Label Group and the Bluebird, a famed songwriters’ nightspot. The contestants sat in chairs in the center of the room, where songwriters play “in the round” and swap songs and stories.
Big Machine label chief Scott Borchetta, who is mentoring this year’s Idol singers, told the story of signing Swift to her record deal 11 years ago. “This was the very first place I saw Taylor perform,” he said, and then he pointed right to Jax: “Taylor was sitting right there.”
