If you caught our editorial this year about the increasing number of men rocking purses at fashion weeks and beyond, you’ll be familiar with the great range of alternatives to a backpack now available. From luxury side bags to shoppers and totes, there’s a whole new world of stylish ways to carry your stuff. And perhaps the fastest rising trend is the neck pouch.
Generally measuring between five and 10 inches in height, neck pouches offer the combined functionality of a wallet and phone case without hiding away any flex-worthy branding in your back pocket. Labels from 1017 ALYX 9SM to Balenciaga have embellished neck pouches with their design signatures this season. Some pieces can be rocked to complement a head-turning streetwear ’fit (Off-White™, Palm Angels) and others offer next-level chic (Jacquemus, Maison Margiela).
Indeed, perhaps leading the way in SS19 is French designer Simon Porte Jacquemus. Now in just his second menswear season, Jacquemus and his “Le Gadjo” neck wallets are a perfect example of how you don’t have to look femme or overdressed to sport an accessory traditionally associated with women’s fashion.
“It seems to have gone fanny packs, side bags, chest rigs, and now neck bags,” says Highsnobiety’s Noah Thomas (above) of the trend. “Men having a well-designed everyday bag to stash their belongings is still kind of new and exciting for many guys, which is why I think there’s such a big place for these new variations. Bags like this Acne Studios coin purse double as an alternative to a precious metal necklace being the star around your neck.”
Other highlights from our selection include a neon yellow explorer pouch by Balenciaga, a more functional multi-pocketed number by United Standard, and a logo-printed calfskin bag by luxury powerhouse Burberry. Peep the full selection below.
