Selfies under attack at Cannes 2015

The Cannes Film Festival is aiming to go anti-Kardashian.

Organizers for the international film festival, which kicks off Wednesday in France, are seeking to cut down on time-wasting, self-obsessive snaps during the long walk to the famed Palais for nightly premieres.

Festival director Thierry Frémaux put a shot across the Selfie Nation bow by decrying the practice on the glamorous Cannes red carpet, calling the photos “ridiculous and grotesque.”

“You never look as ugly as you do in a selfie,” Fremaux told the media during an April press conference announcing the 2015 festival film lineup.

Festival attendees, and even some of the film stars themselves, do slow down the red carpet entrance with selfie-taking.

“Everyone does it. I’ve seen big stars do it because it’s the first time they’ve been there and they want to remember it,” says movie database IMDb.com managing editor Keith Simanton. “But I understand festival organizers want to keep the highest level of decorum and class.”
