‘Missoula’ is a compelling cautionary tale

Jon Krakauer’s latest book, is meticulously reported, fascinating and deeply disturbing.

The subtitle — Rape and the Justice System in a College Town — explains that last element.

The best-selling author of Into Thin Air and Into the Wild takes a clear-eyed look at a rash of sexual assaults involving University of Montana students between 2010 and 2012.

By probing the specific, Krakauer illuminates upsetting generalities.

It’s not the creep in the bushes who should be feared most. According to studies Krakauer cites in the book, more than 80% of rapes are non-stranger rapes. Females age 16-24 face a higher risk of being sexually assaulted than any others. Rape is the most under-reported serious crime in the nation. When someone is raped in this country, more than 90% of the time the rapist gets away with the crime.
