At a Des Moines rally for Hillary Clinton last October, Katy Perry busted out a performance of “Roar,” and the song has since become something of a de facto theme song for the Democratic presidential candidate ever since. Before Chelsea Clinton introduced her mother at the D.N.C. in Philadelphia on Thursday night, Perry took to the stage, to bring the anthem full circle.
“That’s right—I love Hillary, too,” the pop star said, urging voters to raise their voices for Clinton in November in order to counter the N.R.A., or “just cancel out your weird cousin’s vote.” Then, she launched into her newest Olympic single “Rise,” another on-message bit of pop songcraft.
“Don’t be surprised; she will still rise!” Perry urged to the crowd, before pivoting to “Roar,” and rounding out many a Democrats’ playlist for the next three months.
