First take: ‘Star Wars’ trailer takes fans home

A wrecked Star Destroyer. A closeup on a TIE Fighter pilot. Stormtroopers in formation. Lightsabers and droids aplenty. But Harrison Ford’s Han Solo says it best in the new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens: “Chewie, we’re home.”

Director J.J. Abrams and a slew of cast and crew were on hand to unveil the latest teaser for the new Star Wars film — the seventh in the franchise since director George Lucas’ 1977 original — that arrives in theaters Dec. 18.

The trailer revealed today at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, Calif., offers a mix of new and old for fans of the sci-fi franchise. It begins with a voiceover from Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), who intones that his family is strong in the Force — a major theme from Lucas’ first trilogy, as well as the prequels that follow the back story of his father Anakin Skywalker and his journey toward the Dark Side of the Force as Darth Vader. (There’s even a glimpse at Vader’s burned helmet.)
